Miss B turned 6 last Wednesday. She's in school and does ballet. Her hair goes way down her back and she has a crazy mess of loose baby teeth, empty gummy spaces and crooked, partially grown in adult teeth. When did this all happen?
For the last few years I've been sending cookies on her birthday. She thinks it's the coolest when a delivery guy arrives for HER. With something special for her to open (and eat). I must have been mumbling when I called in the order because the gift card said "Love Auntie Amber and Uncle FRED". She doesn't care who they're from anyway. They are COOKIES.
I thought it would be fun to take her to see Beauty and the Beast 3D. Mostly because I needed an excuse to go see it and because she doesn't often get to go anywhere without her mom, dad and siblings so I thought it would be a fun treat.
It was. $60 later...
She talked my ear off on the way to the theatre.
Miss B: Your Jeep is so cool, Auntie.
Miss B: Our car has a door right here, Auntie.
Miss B: Is this the speaker? Our car has an oval one over here with a cup holder and a thing for snacks.
Miss B: Can we get Skittles, Auntie? And popcorn?
We line up for tickets, planning our attack. I'm hungry, so we decide to start with chicken bites and cheese fries. I'm prepared to buy her anything she asks for. That's what Aunties are for. She says she wants Apple juice, but then drinks most of my Iced tea.
Miss B: It's okay, I'm allowed.
Then we play a few video games before the movie starts. We mostly just put money into the ones she thought she wanted to play, then she'd play for 10 seconds and change her mind. Twice we walked away with credits still in the machines.
J reminded me on the way out the door to stop in for a bathroom break BEFORE the movie started. Smart Mommy. We went. Miss B ensured me she didn't have to go and could hold it, so off to the snack counter.
She asked for the RED bag of popcorn, for us to share of course, a bag of original Skittles and a Kinder egg.
She reaches out and tries to touch things all throughout the 3D pre-views. I giggle to myself.
Part way through the movie she taps my arm. I lean in. She asks:
Miss B: Auntie? Can we stay for the WHOLE movie?
me: of course
Miss B: REALLY?!?!? Yayyyyy!
Then 10 minutes later she informs me she is tired of wearing her 3D glasses and "is used to it" without them and watches the rest of Beauty and the Beast in blurry, non-glasses 3D.
And LOVES every second of it.
On the way out we spend $6 trying to win a pink stuffed bear from the claw machine and get strawberry frozen yogurt.
She's quiet the whole way home. She eats frozen yogurt and popcorn TOGETHER then informs her dad when we get there:
Miss B: I probably won't eat any of my supper tonight.
Shocker.
I think it was probably the best gift I could have given her. It's not the stuff in life that really counts, it's the experiences.
Happy 6th Birthday, Miss B. Love Auntie Amber (and Uncle Fred)

Cold
It's been unseasonably warm this winter. Until this week. It was -41 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. We had almost no snow. Until last Saturday. Now every time Clover goes out into the yard she makes it her mission to eat as much snow as she can.
